Roots & Shoots Kick Start Course Report!!
「アクションのはじめの一歩」をふみ出しました！
8月22日（金）、全4回シリーズの Roots & Shoots キックスタートコースがいよいよ始まりました！
第1回目のテーマは「アクションのはじめの一歩」。小学生から高校生までのユースたちがオンラインに集まり、それぞれの「やってみたい！」という思いを形にしていく旅が始まりました。勇気を出して、Roots & Shoots キックスタートコースに参加するという最初の一歩を踏み出してくれてありがとうございます。
まず最初に参加者紹介をしたのち、早速、「思いやりのあるリーダーシップ」に関するワークを行いました。
アクションを起こす人に必要なのは、ただの「強さ」ではなく「思いやり」。いろんなリーダーシップの特徴について話しながら、みんなで「どんなリーダーになりたいか」を考えました。
それから、Roots & Shootsを形つくっている、4-Step Formula「知ってワクワクする → 探究する → 行動する → 祝福する」の流れを学習。そしてグループワークでは、自分がわくわくするテーマやどんなことに思いを寄せているかなどを互いに共有。それをもとに、次は具体的なアクションにもつながる探究につながる「コミュニティマッピング」の方法をレクチャー。それぞれこの一カ月、仲間とともに地域の探究をしてもらうことを宿題にしています。
最後に一人ひとりチェックアウトをして初回は終了しました。どのグループでも、一人ひとりが「地球の未来のために、自分にできることは何だろう」と、特別な思いをシェアしてくれました。画面越しでも温かい雰囲気に包まれた時間となりました。
参加した3つのユースグループ
今回は、日本語グループ2つと英語グループ1つの、合計3グループでスタート！小学生の仲良しメンバーで集まった元気いっぱいのチーム、同じ高校から集まった有志グループ、そして一人から参加を決意した英語グループ。これから仲間を見つけ、少しずつ成長していく姿が楽しみです！（終了後、すでに新たなメンバーが加わったという報告も届いておりワクワク！）。次回は9月26日。「私たちのファーストアクションはこれ！」と題し、マッピングを報告し、ネクストステップについて考えます。
ルーツ&シューツコーディネーターの振り返り
【日本語グループ】
小林悠：６月のJane博士来日イベントをきっかけに参加してくれた高校生チーム、Janeさんの言葉がこうしてユースの後押しをしてくれてることに感銘を受けました。今回は、試しに、学校の課題とリソースを考えてみましたが、意外に思い浮かばなかったことが気づきです。次回のセッションまでに、どのようにチームがマッピングしてきてくれるか楽しみです。
堀井祥子 : 同じダンススタジオに通う小学生と中学生のチームで、皆それぞれ数年前から気候変動に関心があり、小さなアクションをしてきたメンバー。過去の体験から海ゴミの問題に今はフォーカスしていますが、今回1人参加出来なかったので、コミュニティマッピングを通じて取り組む課題に変化があるのか、さらに今の興味が深まるのか？どんな対話が生まれるか楽しみです！
【英語グループ】
ラリッサ：オープンマインドで「違いを生み出すための第一歩」を踏み出そうと熱心に参加してくれた参加者にとても刺激を受けました。彼女はすでに自然への情熱を持っていて、行動を起こしたいと考えていました。ファシリテーターが彼女の声に耳を傾け、この旅の最初の一歩をしっかりと支えたいという一体感も感じました。
大庭美菜：私たちのグループに参加してくれたユースの話を聞いていくと、植物や虫へ思いを寄せていることをシェアしてくれました。そこで、「学校の再野生化」に関心があることを教えてくださり、それを実現できない葛藤についても話してくれました。これから、マッピングを通して、どんな人と出会い、どんな変化が生まれるか楽しみです。
コーディネーターコース
今回、キックスタートコースと一緒に始まった「ルーツ&シューツ コーディネーターコース」。ユースとともにアクションを起こしたいと願う大人たちを募集。第一期となる今回、嬉しいことに15人が申し込んでくださいました！
キックスタートコースを見学しながら、Roots & Shoots の「4 Step Formula」を学び、それぞれの地域や学校などでルーツ&シューツのコーディネーターとして将来的にジェーン博士のヴィジョンをつないでいきます。
第0回のオンデマンド講座へのフィードバックも多くいただき、参加者の情熱に触れ、励まされました。また、第1回目のセッション終了後、30分間の振り返り時間では、以下のような言葉を参加者からいただきました。
「ユースに教えるというよりも教えてもらった。気づきがたくさんあった」
「レールを引いた講座ではなく、余白を持たせたユース主体のプログラムだということがわかった」
「関心を言葉にしながら、互いに尊重しているユースの姿が見れた」
次回、また皆さんのお会いできることが楽しみです！
We’ve taken our very first, exciting step toward action!
On Friday, August 22, we launched the four-session Roots & Shoots Kickstart Course with passion and anticipation!
The theme of Session 1 was “The First Step to Action.” Youth participants, from elementary to high school, gathered online to begin their journey of turning their ideas and passion into action. Thank you to everyone who took the courageous first step of joining the Roots & Shoots Kickstart Course.
After introductions, we dove into an activity on “Compassionate Leadership.” Effective leadership is rooted in compassion. While discussing the traits of leadership, everyone reflected on the kind of leader they aspire to be.
We then learned about the Roots & Shoots 4-Step Formula: Get Inspired → Explore → Take Action → Celebrate. In group work, participants shared the themes of what they truly care about and the issues they feel connected to. Building on that, we introduced the method of Community Mapping, which will help lead to exploration and concrete action in local communities. As homework for the coming month, participants will explore their communities together with their teammates.
Finally, each person shared a short check-out reflection before we wrapped up the session. In every group, participants expressed their heartfelt thoughts about “What can I do for the future of our planet?” Even through the screen, the atmosphere felt warm and inspiring.
The Three Youth Groups Who Joined
This time, we launched with three groups: two Japanese-speaking groups and one English-speaking group. One was an energetic team of close elementary school friends, another was a group of volunteers from the same high school, and the last was a single participant who bravely joined the English-speaking group. We are excited to watch them find teammates and grow together! (In fact, we’ve already received reports that new members have joined since the session—how exciting!).
Our next session will be on September 26, themed “This Is Our First Action!” Groups will present their community mapping and discuss their next steps.
Reflections from the Roots & Shoots Coordinators
Japanese speaking Groups
- Yu: A high school team joined after being inspired by Dr. Jane’s visit to Japan in June. I was impressed by how Jane’s words continue to empower youth. For this session, we tried brainstorming school-related challenges and resources, but the team realized it was harder than expected. I am looking forward to seeing how their mapping evolves by the next session.
- Shoko: Our group included elementary and junior high students from the same dance studio, all of whom have been concerned about climate change for several years and have taken small actions. Based on past experiences, they are currently focused on ocean plastic waste. One member could not join this time, so I am curious to see how community mapping will shape their focus—whether their interests will shift or deepen further. I am excited about the dialogue that will unfold.
English speaking Group
- Larissa: I was inspired by the participant who came with an open mind,eager to take the first steps to make a difference. She was already passionate about nature and wanted to take action. I felt that the facilitators listened to the participant and wanted her to feel supported in these first steps of her journey.
- Mina: Listening to the youth in our group, I was touched by how she shared her deep care for plants and insects. She told us about her interest in “rewilding her school” and also about the struggles she faced when this idea was rejected by a teacher. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of people she will meet in the future and what kind of changes will emerge through the community mapping.
Launch of Coordinator Course!
Alongside the Kickstart Course, we also launched the Roots & Shoots Coordinator Course, for adults who wish to support youth-led action. We were delighted that 15 people signed up for this very first cohort!
Participants observed the Kickstart Course while learning the Roots & Shoots 4-Step Formula. In the future, they will bring Dr. Jane’s vision to life in their own schools, communities, and organizations as Roots & Shoots coordinators.
We also received valuable feedback from the on-demand Session 0 lecture, which was very encouraging. After Session 1, we had a 30-minute reflection session with the following comments from participants:
- “Rather than teaching the youth, I felt like I was being taught by them. I had so many realizations.”
- “This isn’t a rigid, pre-set course—it leaves space for youth to lead the program themselves.”
- “I was impressed by how the youth were able to put their interests into words while respecting one another.”
We look forward to seeing everyone again in the next session!
