国際平和デー「肌の色や言語、文化、宗教よりも重要なのは、私たちが皆が同じ人間であるということ」
International Day of Peace 2023
こんにちは、ジェーン・グドールです。私は国連ピース・メッセンジャーです。
正直なところ、今年はどんなメッセージを発信するべきか悩みました。なぜなら、今の世界は平和からとてもかけ離れているからです。しかし、世界中の何百万人もの人々が戦争を嫌い、平和な世界で暮らすことを夢見ています。
女性たちは、夫や息子が戦場に駆り出されると抗議し、再会すると涙を流します。負傷していたり、遺体の袋に入った姿で──。生還した若い男性の多くは、戦争の恐怖から深く心を傷つけてしまいます。
そして武力紛争が世界のあちこちで起きています。ロシアのウクライナ軍事侵攻。イスラエルとパレスチナの間で続く紛争。多くのアフリカ諸国で起きている戦争や武力紛争。過激派組織によるテロ行為。先住民族や少数民族への抑圧。学校での銃乱射事件。路上での暴力の増加。人種差別をはじめとする差別。
自然界の継続的な破壊も続いています。森林伐採、環境汚染、採鉱。工業的農業は有毒な化学農薬や除草剤、人工肥料を使用しています。土壌は破壊され、生物多様性に深刻な影響を及ぼしています。人間の自然に対する暴力行為によって、私たちは今、動植物種の6度目の大絶滅の真っただ中にいます。そしてこれは人為的な気候変動によってさらに悪化しています。私たちは、知覚をもつ何十億という動物を、ペットやエンタメ、医療研究、工場畜産などによって非常に残酷に扱っています。
もし、皆が黄金律を心にとめて、互いに思いやることができたら、どんな世界が広がっているでしょう。その中には動物や母なる自然も含まれるはずです。
今年、国連は「平和のための行動」をテーマに掲げました。平和を育むために、個人と集団の責任を認識する行動を呼びかけています。この呼びかけは、皆で変化をもたらす後押しとなります。
そしてこれは、JGIの、人道的プログラムであり環境プログラムである「ルーツ&シューツ」の使命です。現在、70近くの国で活発に取り組まれています。平和を願う仲間たちは、シーツや針金、混凝紙を再利用して作った大きな鳩を飛ばすことでしょう。ダナ・ライオンズの曲「Circle the World」の音楽とともに、世界各国で空を舞います。世界の平和を実現するために、川や海のゴミを無くしたり、植樹したり、環境保全団体のために募金活動を行うなどのプロジェクトを立ち上げ、行動することを自分たちで選んでいます。野生生物の違法取引をなくすために、団体と協力して活動するグループもあります。捨てられてしまった犬や猫、家畜産業や野生動物の違法取引から保護された動物たちのシェルターでボランティアをしている人もいます。高齢者や病気の人の代わりに犬を散歩したり、有機農園の手入れをしたり、各々の文化の服に身にまとい、食べ物や飲み物を持ち寄りながら、近所の人たちに活動や自分たちの物語をシェアしている人もいます。皆が楽しみながら活動しています。
このようにして、肌の色や言語、文化、宗教よりも重要なのは、私たちが皆が同じ人間であるということを学んでいくのです。
私たちはたくさんの精神的・肉体的な痛みを感じます。皆、泣き、笑い、そして愛します。一人ひとりが、周囲の人々や動物、自然に対して優しさを示し、敬意を払うために最善を尽くすことができます。家族や友人、仕事仲間との異なる考えなどに対し、歩み寄ることができます。私たちは新しく到着した難民に友情の手を差し伸べることができます。私たちは倫理的な選択をすることができます。何を買うか、何を食べるか、何を着るか。つまり、環境を壊したり、動物を虐待したり、不当な賃金によって安価な商品を買わないという選択もできるのです。
核兵器から世界を解放するために活動する多くの素晴らしい団体を支援することで、対立する派閥の指導者たちが平和的な解決策を見いだせることでしょう。
私はイスラエルとパレスチナの若い人たちとともに、人間、動物、環境にとってより良い世界を作るためのプロジェクトに取り組もうとしています。
私は先日までタンザニアなどいろんな場所にいました。ルーツとシューツのメンバーは、イスラム教徒もキリスト教徒も関係なく、それぞれが選んだプロジェクトに一緒に取り組んでいます。
最後に、ルーツ&シューツを象徴するプロジェクトを紹介して、終わりにしたいと思います。
それは、コンゴ民主共和国で最初に結成されたルーツ＆シューツのグループでした。若者たちは、かつては神聖な丘だった場所の森を再生したいと思い、プロジェクトを始めました。正直なところ、無謀なことでした。しかし、そのグループのメンターは子どもたちを失望させたくありません。そこで幼樹を寄付してくれる友人を見つけ、さらにそこは鉱物資源が豊富な山であったため紛争が絶えず、民兵がいたので大佐に交渉しにいきました。大佐は馬鹿げたプロジェクトだと言いましたが、害はないだろうと兵隊をつけることを条件に許可されました。
想像してみてください。10歳や12歳の15人の子どもたちが、小さなリュックと水筒を背負って山に入る姿を。すごく暑く、さらに想像よりも遥かに遠い丘にやっとの思いで丘に到着し、子どもたちはAK-47の自動小銃を担いだ屈強な兵士たちに囲まれながら植樹を始めました。しかし、しばらくすると最年少の女の子が、泣き出してしまいました。地面があまりにも固く、木を植えるための穴が掘れなくて。それから10分ほど、ひとりの兵士が銃を木に立てかけ、女の子を手伝い始めたのです。そしてさらに10分もしないうちに、兵士全員が銃を置き、子どもたちと一緒に森の再生にみんなで取り組み始めました。
そう、これこそが、世界のあるべき姿です──。

Hello, this is Jane Goodall. I’m a U.N. messenger of peace, and it honestly isn’t easy to think what message I should share this year, because right now the world is so very far from being peaceful.
Yet so many millions of people around the world hate war and dream of living in peace. Mothers protest when their husbands or sons are forced to fight and weep when they return. Wounded or in body bags. And the young men who survive, often deeply traumatized by the horror of war.
And this seems to be more or armed conflict all over the place. The Russia, Ukraine war. The continuing conflict between Israel and Palestine. The wars and armed conflicts in many African countries. The acts of terrorism by religious extremist groups. The oppression of indigenous people and minority groups. The school shootings. The increasing violence on the street. And of course, racism and discrimination.
And then the continuing attacks on the natural world. The deforestation, pollution, mining and industrial agriculture, with its use of often poisonous chemical pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertilizers. The very soil is being killed and there’s a terrible effect on biodiversity. We are in the midst of the sixth great extinction of plant and animal species, this one caused by human acts of violence against nature.
And this is made worse by human induced climate change. We are treating billions of sentient animals with great cruelty as pets and entertainment in medical research laboratories and in so-called factory farms.
Just imagine what the world would be like if everyone paid heed to the Golden rule common to every single major religion due to others as you would like them to do to you. And those others should include animals and Mother Nature.
This year, the U.N. set the theme Actions for peace, a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. This call to action helps us to work on manageable projects that will collectively make a difference. And this, of course, is the mission of JGI’s humanitarian program, and environmental program, Roots and Shoots, which is now active in almost 70 countries around the world.
Members for peace will be flying giant peace, doves made of recycled bedsheets and chicken wire or papier maché. They’ll be flying them in many countries around the globe while playing the song by Dana Lyons song, “Circle the World”
They’ll also be choosing projects to promote peace with the natural world, projects such as clearing trash from rivers, lakes and oceans. Planting trees or raising money for conservation organizations.
Some groups are working with those seeking to end the illegal wildlife trade. Some are volunteering in shelters for abandoned dogs and cats, or sanctuaries for rescued farm animals or animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Some are walking dogs for sick or elderly, tending their organic gardens, gathering together in their neighborhood to share projects and stories with food and drink and costumes from different cultures. Having fun.
And in this way they are learning that more important than the color of skin, language, culture and religion is the fact that we’re all human.
We all feel many mental and physical pain. We all weep and laugh and love. We can each and every one of us do our best to show kindness to and respect for the people, animals and nature around us. We can try to reconcile differences within our families or with friends or work colleagues. We can reach out a hand in friendship to a newly arrived refugee. We can make ethical choices. What we buy what we eat, what we wear, which means we can refuse to buy products that have harmed the environment. Being cruel to animals are cheap because of unfair wages.
We can support the many wonderful organizations working to free the world from nuclear weapons. Find ways to help the leaders of warring factions to try and find peaceful solutions to their differences.
I’m trying to bring together young people from Israel and Palestine to work together on projects to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment.
And I was just in Tanzania and everywhere. Roots and shoots members Muslim and Christian alike are working together on projects of their choice.
I want to end this by describing a roots and Shoots project that seems somehow symbolical.
It’s about the first group of roots and shoots that was formed in DRC, the Democratic Republic of Congo. They decided for their project they wanted to put the forest back on what was once a sacred hill. It was actually not really possible.
But their mentor not wanting to discourage them. Found some saplings that a forest a friend of his donated, but he also had to go to the head of the group that was there because this is in the area of conflict in eastern DRC where all the minerals are. So there’s always warring factions, factions there. The head said, well, it’s a silly project, but I suppose there’s no harm in it. But I’m afraid I’ll have to send soldiers.
Well, imagine his this little group of about 15 young people aged about, I don’t know, 10 to 12 each carrying their little sapling and something to drink with. And it’s very hot and it’s much further than they thought. And when they get there, the ground is very hard. With them for big Congolese soldiers with AK 47 slung across their shoulders and they stand there and watch the children.
And after a little while, the youngest, a little girl, starts to cry because the ground is so hard and she can’t dig the hole for her tree. And after watching this for about 10 minutes, maybe less, one of the soldiers lays his gun against a tree and goes to help her. And within the next 10 minutes, all the soldiers have laid aside their guns and are working with the children to help restore nature.
That’s how the world should be. Thank you.
